First-Year and Transfer Students

First-year and transfer students who are U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens must submit the following as early as possible (see deadlines). Independent students need not provide parent information.

For 2015–2016

  • CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE (students interested solely in federal funds—grant, student, or parent loans—are not required to complete the Profile)
  • CSS/Noncustodial Parent PROFILE (if your natural parents never married or are separated or divorced). For exclusion complete the NCP Waiver on My Financial Aid
  • Bennington Financial Aid Application, completed at My Financial Aid, available only when you have applied for admission and received a web ID from financial aid.
  • 2015–2016 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
    • Before filing a FAFSA, apply for a federal PIN at pin.ed.gov; if you are a dependent student, have the parent completing the FAFSA with you apply for his/her PIN also. Federal PINs are the electronic signatures required to complete a FAFSA. Keep a record of them.
    • Report your and your parents' names and social security numbers exactly as they appear on the social security card. Filing a FAFSA invokes a name/number/citizenship match with the Social Security Administration.
    • If your natural parents are divorced, separated, or single, only your custodial parent’s household financial information (including that of your custodial parent’s current spouse) is entered on the FAFSA.
    • Use the FAFSA's IRS Data Retrieval tool three weeks after e-filing your 2014 federal tax return.
  • 2014 W-2s, parent and student―Send legible copies of employer-issued W-2s for students and parents of dependent applicants to Bennington College.

By May 30 (for enrolling students)

  • Confirm IRS figures on FAFSA: If you did not use IRS Data Retrieval when first filing the FAFSA, you must do so later. Several weeks after your family has filed 2014 federal income tax returns, log into the FAFSA again and authorize IRS Data Retrieval for all relevant tax returns, parent and student.
  • Check My Financial Aid, to see whether other forms are required, and print any required forms. Send these directly to the Financial Aid Office.
  • Accept, decline, or reduce the funds in your financial aid award online at My Financial Aid.
  • If you want the federal student loan in your financial aid award, complete loan counseling and promissory note and submit other forms or information directly to the Financial Aid Office.

Continuing Students

Currently enrolled undergraduate students who are U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens must submit the following as early as possible (see deadlines). Deadline: April 30, 2015

For 2015–2016

  • Note: Most citizens must use the IRS Data Retrieval process, or get an IRS tax transcript, to pull correct tax figures into the FAFSA. Please read the instructions carefully.
  • FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
    • Sign the FAFSA with your federal PIN; your parent (custodial, if your parents are divorced) will sign with his/her own federal PIN. Get a PIN (or retrieve a lost one) at pin.ed.gov.
    • Report your and your parents' names and social security numbers exactly as they appear on the social security card. Filing a FAFSA invokes a name/number/citizenship match with the Social Security Administration.
    • If your natural parents are divorced or separated, only your custodial parent’s household financial information (including that of your custodial parent’s current spouse) is entered on the FAFSA.
    • Use the FAFSA's IRS Data Retrieval tool, available two weeks after you electronically file your 2014 federal tax returns (or eight weeks after you file taxes on paper); don't send Bennington College copies of your tax return. If your IRS Data Retrieval is not yet available, you may file the FAFSA using estimates, but you must log in again later to request IRS Data Match corrections for your FAFSA. The aid application will not be complete until the IRS-FAFSA Data Retrieval has successfully transferred relevant tax information.
    • Families who do not qualify for the IRS Data Match (for example, married parents filing separately) will provide tax account information directly from the IRS.
  • Bennington College Renewal Aid Application completed at My Financial Aid; contact the Financial Aid Office if you have lost or forgotten your Bennington College financial aid web ID and PIN.
  • 2014 W-2s, parent and student―Send legible copies of employer-issued W-2s for students and parents of dependent applicants to Bennington College.
  • Non-Custodial Parent's Form (if your natural parents never married or are divorced or separated)
  • Outside Scholarship Form―due by June 30, only from students who received an outside scholarship in the prior year and/or from those who will receive an outside scholarship for the coming year.

By May 30

  • Accept, decline, or reduce the funds in your financial aid award online at My Financial Aid.
  • Check My Financial Aid, to see whether other forms are required, and print any required forms. Send these directly to the Financial Aid Office.
  • If you want a Federal Direct Student Loan, but did not borrow last year, complete loan counseling and a Master Promissory Note (MPN).
  • If a parent would like a Federal Parent PLUS loan, he/she must complete an application (and a Parent PLUS MPN, if he/she did not borrow last year). Your parent will need his/her own federal PIN to sign in and complete the online Federal Direct Parent PLUS application (and promissory note, if required).
  • State grant applicants, please be sure to meet state grant deadlines.
