The Poetry Society of America named MFA faculty member Susan Kinsolving winner of the 2009 Lyric Poetry Award for her poem "Parliament Passes The Inclosing Lands Act, 1809." The $500 prize is awarded annually for a single lyric poem of no longer than 50 lines.
"Kinsolving has fashioned her own finely hewn lyric," said Lucie Brock-Broido, this year's judge. "Her prosody is subtle, her rhyme schemes graceful and unobtrusive; her empathies are musical and clear. And the details of her lexicon are lovely."
Kinsolving read her winning poem at the Poetry Society of America's annual awards ceremony at the National Arts Club in New York on April 29.
