Norman F. Derby, Physics
Active in the field of physics pedagogy with publications in The Physics Teacher and other AAPT publications, Derby served as visiting scholar at the Center for Educational Computing Initiatives at MIT (2001-02) and as adjunct professor at the U.S. Air Force Academy (1996), where he participated in the formation of innovative physics courses promoting the use of new technologies for teaching. Recent work has involved computational physics, the simulation of electromagnetic phenomena, and the development of interactive software for classroom use. He is a panelist for the National Science Foundation's Graduate Fellowship Program. He received a grant from the National Science Foundation to help equip the College's Stickney Observatory. Past research interests have included solar wind plasma physics (published in The Astrophysical Journal) and, during his tenure as visiting scientist at the High Altitude Observatory (1989), helioseismology. BS, Loyola University; PhD, MIT. He has taught at Bennington since 1978; he has also served as Dean of Studies, Dean of Faculty, Director of Administrative Computing, and Dean of the College.
