Maxine Henryson, Photography
Henryson's work investigates place, the spiritual aspects of culture, and the passage of time. She has completed three major bodies of photographic work since 1992: I-Dea: the Goddess Within (with collaborator Hunter Reynolds), XisYandisZ (St. Petersburg, Russia) and Ujjai's Journey (South India). Her work has been exhibited at a wide range of venues, including the Santa Monica Museum of Art in California, the Linda Kirkland Gallery in New York City, the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College, The Stroganoff Palace of the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, the Usdan Gallery of Bennington College, the Museum of Contemporary Spirituality, the Trinitarska Tower in Lublin, Poland, and the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers, NY. Her work is in numerous private collections including a large number of works in the Celanese Photography Collection in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. In April of 2003 her artist book, Presence, comprised of 24 color photographs from her XisYandisZ and Ujjai's Journey series, was released. A freelance editorial photographer in New York City for many years, she has been published in The New Yorker, The New York Times, and New York magazine. She has taught at University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, the International Center of Photography, and City University of New York.
