Gregory Maqoma, Dance Guest Artist
Maqoma started his training with Moving into Dance Mophatong, based in Johannesburg, South Africa, and performed and choreographed in a number of African countries, Europe, and in the United States. In 1999, he trained with Anne Theresa De Keersmaeker in Brussels and also started his own company, Vuyani Dance Theatre. He received the FNB Vita Dance and Contemporary Award for best choreography in South Africa In 2002. Maqoma has created works for numerous companies, including Moving Into Dance and The Dance Factory in Johannesburg, Jazzart Dance Company in Cape Town, the International Theaterschool Amsterdam, and the Adzido Pan African Dance Ensemble in London, among others. Recently, he performed with Akram Kahn Dance Company as part of the Steve Reigh@70 festival at Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and elsewhere. Maqoma will be a dance guest artist at Bennington in Spring 2007.
