Susan Sgorbati, Dance; Mediation


With colleague Daniel Michaelson, Sgorbati created and directs a mediation program for the Bennington County school system called Quantum Leap, which reconnects public school students to their education. She is currently a mediator for the Vermont Attorney General's Office and the Vermont Human Rights Commission. As a choreographer, Sgorbati created Materia Prima in 1999, a professional dance project for the performance of dance improvisation. She has been performing for the New York Dance Improvisation Festival in NYC for the last several years. She has done projects with Movement Research and the Williamsburg Art Nexus in NYC, and with the Flynn Theater in Burlington, VT. Her most recent work has taken her to the Neurosciences Institute in La Jolla, CA, where she was in residence. This work is relating emergent forms in dance improvisation to 'swarm intelligence' and the study of complex systems. BA, MFA, Bennington (she was the first graduate fellow in Dance). She was the Dean of Faculty from 1991-94, and now holds the Barbara and Lewis Jones Chair of Social Activism. She has taught at Bennington since 1983.
