MFA in Performing Arts: Music

Performance and the creation of original work are integral to Bennington’s MFA program in music. Motivated, accomplished, and independent graduate candidates pursue their studies in a richly creative environment that offers them the opportunity to deepen their imagination and to refine their skills. Students are encouraged to grow and expand in their particular area of interest while broadening their understanding of music in general. In dialogue with the music faculty, courses are suggested that round out each student’s unique educational experience. MFA candidates must show work regularly in the weekly Music Workshop and contribute to the bi-annual Music Festival where faculty will be available to offer valuable critique and support.

MFA candidates will submit a “plan proposal” explaining clearly why they want to come to Bennington and what they hope to gain by being here. Candidates should demonstrate an involvement with more than one area of music, experience in the field, an original aesthetic outlook, self-discipline in work habits, and the willingness to be a role model for younger students in the Bennington musical community.
