Shadowing and Volunteering
Bennington values hands-on experience in a broad range of areas as a complement to one’s studies. Outside the classroom, our postbac students engage in the community through shadowing physicians, research projects, and community service. We help connect students with a variety of local opportunities throughout the year.
In addition to the program’s relationship with Southwestern Vermont Medical Center, Bennington assists students in connecting with practicing physicians and other healthcare professionals all around the area for shadowing and research, beginning with the summer term.
SVMC takes a strong interest in our postbac students, meeting with the group to get to know each student and his or her goals, making introductions between students and the physicians they wish to shadow, facilitating the orientation process and mentoring them throughout the year.
Our students have done impressive work in partnership with many community organizations, including PAVE (Project Against Violent Encounters), the 6 Bank Street Homeless Shelter, Bennington Free Clinic, and local chapters of Habitat for Humanity among others. There are opportunities for students who are interested in working with at-risk children, such as the Bennington College Quantum Leap program, the Big Brother/Big Sister program and several other organizations in and around Bennington.
The Office of Student Life maintains a Community Engagement listing featuring several organizations in the area and can assist students in pursuing these opportunities.
