Home-schooled Students

Bennington welcomes applicants who have been home-schooled. For the years of high school for which there is no official transcript, the applicant is requested to document each course taken, dates and amount of time spent on each, as well as to provide a brief description of the courses (including texts read and work produced), and some form of assessment by an instructor if at all possible. Letters of recommendation should not come from family members or friends, but from adults who have worked with the student in a teaching/learning setting.

In terms of financial aid, Bennington requires you to submit one of the following options in order to qualify:

1. GED

2. Self-certification, which includes:

a. A letter from a parent or guardian declaring self-certification, describing the course of study followed and stating that the student has successfully completed this program.

AND

b. A formal certificate of completion of a home-school program certified by your state or local board of education.

3. An official transcript showing successful completion of at least two years of college-level work; or

4. Receive a passing score on a Department of Education approved ability to benefit test.

While we do not require standardized test scores of our applicants, we strongly encourage home-schooled students in particular to take either the SAT, SAT II Subject tests, or the ACT.
