Visual arts faculty member and director of the Visual Arts Lecture Series (VALS), Vanessa Lyon has been awarded a MacDowell Fellowship for the Fall/Winter 2022-2023 residency period.

As the Robert Frost Stone House Museum opens for its second season under Bennington College’s stewardship, visitors to the property will be invited to reimagine Frost and his surrounding environment with (Im)Possibilities of Landscape, a senior curatorial work presented by Sophia Gasparro ’19.

Art History, a leading journal in the field, has published an essay by Vanessa Lyon called "A Psalm for King James: Rubens's Peace Embracing Plenty and the Virtues of Female Affection at Whitehall.”

Vanessa Lyon's teaching and research range from early Renaissance to modern and contemporary visual culture with a focus on European painting. She is especially interested in transhistorical and transcultural approaches to gender, race, and representation in early modern visuality, and the legacies of the 'Old Masters' in subsequent art and its histories.

She explores the relationship of cultural identity and artistic practice in multi-ethnic and multi-religious environments and the discourse of images and craftsmanship in Islamic cultures.
