The Art of Spanish I: Language through Painting

Come take a journey from the Baroque, to the Gothic, to the Grotesque, and develop a tongue for Spanish through an immersion in painting. The first half of this full-year course offers an introduction to the Spanish-speaking world through a critical examination of the paintings of Velazquez, Goya, Picasso, Kahlo, and Botero among others. What is it about Spanish painting that pushes the boundaries of art and expression? Students will explore the cultural, historical, and personal influences on painting from the Spanish world and gain a strong base in the Spanish language. Students will learn to speak, listen, read, and write, developing sentence-level discourse.
