Classroom Teaching: Theory into Practice
S07
David Beriau, Sue Maguire
In this seminar students explore what it means to be a teacher, to work in classrooms, and to become members of school communities. Readings and discussions focus on the experiences of novice and expert teachers, how different theoretical frames organize teaching and teaching-learning interactions differently, and the multiple complexities of teacher work. To ground our understandings of these issues within real-life contexts, students observe and reflect upon the practices of local classroom teachers, and they design and implement conceptually-based lessons and activities. The capstone assignment of the course is the creation of a Qualifying Portfolio required for passage into the student teaching year. Only open to MAT students and BA/MAT students in their senior year.
