Hand Building Ceramics
F05, F06, S07
Barry Bartlett, Yoko Inoue
This is an introductory course in basic hand-building techniques for making functional or sculptural objects in ceramics. Coil building and slab construction techniques to achieve various structural forms will be introduced. The students will learn how to make larger and more elaborate forms by joining modular components and by inventing stacking and interlocking devices.

A thought-provoking approach to using and understanding clay will be emphasized. Basic glazing techniques will be introduced but students are also encouraged to experiment with surface treatments and construction methods by combining other elements such as wire, textile, wax, or found objects, etc. Assignments will be given throughout this course to practice various techniques and drawing/sketchbook assignments will be given for each project.
