History of Theater II: Modern Drama
F05
Kathleen Dimmick
This course examines the history and aesthetics of the theater, including the development of staging, production, and acting methods and styles. In the fall of 2005 we will read representative plays from the modern canon, beginning with the experiments in naturalism in the 19th century through 20th-century modernism to the contemporary drama of today. Along with the plays, we’ll look at critical and theoretical essays that elucidate the historical context and dramatic conventions of these works. Students will take midterm and final exams, and will write one essay.
