Interlocking Structures in Ceramics
F05
Yoko Inoue
This is an intermediate/advanced course for elaborating hand-building techniques in making functional or sculptural objects in ceramics. Students will learn to make larger and more complex forms by joining modular components and by inventing stacking and interlocking devices. Coil-building and slab-construction techniques will be the primary means to achieve various structural forms, however, wheel-throwing techniques can be incorporated. Mold making and basic casting methods for creating multiples and modules will be introduced.

Students will be encouraged to experiment with surface treatments and construction methods by combining other elements such as wire, textile, wax, or found objects. Assignments include some research and drawings to help students develop independent projects.
