Steven Bach
John Dos Passos is one of the great American writers of the 20th century, his reputation during his lifetime the equal of Fitzgerald and Hemingway. His works provide perhaps the most panoramic view of American life of any native novelist, and are notable for their innovative techniques and social criticism. We will read Three Soldiers, Manhattan Transfer, and his masterpiece, the three volume USA. Students will be expected to write a minimum of two extended critical papers and outside research will be a requirement of this course.
