An introduction to some of the finest and most entertaining writers of fiction and nonfiction in 18th-century England and Ireland. Reading will begin with Daniel Defoe, and will include Dr. Johnson, Laurence Sterne, Horace Walpole, Oliver Goldsmith, Tobias Smollett, Fanny Burney, and Thomas De Quincy. These works will be read with attention to historical context and there will be at least two essays as well as some shorter writing assignments.
