Playwriting in the World Today—Political and Social Stories

We will read two short published plays by Filloux based on photographs and newspaper articles. Playwrights will bring in a photograph and article as the basis for a short play, which addresses political and/or social issues. This short play will then be expanded into a full-length play (to be handed in at the end of the term). Students will discuss and critique each other’s work for the rewriting process. Research and oral history will also be explored. There will be reading assignments, as well. Students will be graded on attendance, participation in workshop (in-class readings, critiques, rewriting, and discussion), assignments, the short play, and the full-length play.
