Rediscovering Math
S07, F07
Jason Zimba
You can’t stand math. You’re not a math person. Fair enough. But I’ll bet there was a time, long before high school, when you actually thought math was fun. Maybe it was back when you were eight years old, and math was about finding patterns, figuring things out, and exploring the unknown. After that, a decade of misery, I know. How about we just agree to forget all that and start over?

Anticipated topics include What’s amazing about our system of writing numbers; orders of magnitude; operations and what they’re good for; the nature of the infinite; The Library of Babel, by Borges; getting a feel for exponential growth; finding the unknown; “Relations is beautiful”; patterns and symmetry; proof and certainty.
