South Africa's Road to Democracy
F05
Mac Maharaj
South Africa’s transition from apartheid to democracy has been described as a “miracle.” Most of the books dealing with this transition have been written from the perspective of a journalist. While there is a considerable volume of documentation available, there is a dearth of scholarly work devoted to analyzing the process and the outcome of this negotiated transition. Together we shall refine the time and process line; define and or improve the characterization of the different phases of the South African transition; and develop a better understanding of the obstacles and how they were overcome. By the end of the course we shall have produced a framework that has been informed by critical analysis and evaluation.
