Teaching Young Children

“The education of our day is rich in methods, aims, and social ends, but one must still say that it takes no account of life itself,” wrote Maria Montessori. Keeping focused on the lives of young children, this class explores the world of early childhood education at its very best. Through intensive lab work, reading, and reflection, students will develop an understanding of how young children develop and how to create educational settings to enhance this development. All students in the class will have a 4½-hour lab time at the Early Childhood Center (ECC), write a reflection of their work, and have a half-hour meeting with the classroom teacher each week. Students will complete a child study from their observations at the ECC and analyze room design, scheduling, materials, and activities that provide for the optimal development of children.
