This course is for experienced student artists with a firm commitment to serious work in painting or drawing. Students work primarily on self-directed projects in an effort to refine individual concerns and subject matter. Students present work regularly for critique in class as well as for individual studio meetings with the instructor. Development of a strong work ethic will be crucial. There will be an emphasis on the growth of each student’s critical abilities, and the skills to think clearly and to speak articulately about one’s own work and the work of others. There will be supplemental readings, student research, and presentations about the work of late 20th- and 21st-century artists. There will be at least one field trip to New York City to see the work of contemporary artists.
