How to Apply
- Common Application: Bennington uses the Common Application for both freshmen and transfer applications. All parts of the Common Application, including personal statement, teacher evaluations, and school reports, are required.
- Bennington Supplement: The Bennington Supplement is an addendum to the Common Application and includes a separate essay. There is also an additional essay question for transfer applicants.
- Graded Analytical Paper: We require a sample of graded analytical writing from an academic class. Your paper should be an original analysis, including a thesis or argument and secondary sources when appropriate. We will not accept creative writing samples, journal entries, handwritten essays, in-class assignments, or research papers.
- Teacher Evaluations: We require recommendations from teachers in two different subject areas. Choose from among teachers of English, mathematics, foreign languages, science, social studies, and the visual/performing arts. (Use the form provided by the Common Application.)
- School Reports and Transcripts: Please have your guidance counselor complete the Secondary School Report and send a copy of your official secondary school transcript to Bennington, as well as the Mid-Year Report when your mid-year grades are available. Transfer applicants must also submit a Dean's Report and a College/University Report with their official college transcript. (Use the forms provided by the Common Application.)
- Application Fee: You may pay the $60 nonrefundable fee online at commonapp.org with the completion of an online application, or submit payment by mail with the Bennington Supplement. If the application fee presents a significant financial burden, students may obtain a fee waiver form from a guidance counselor or the College Board.
- Test Scores: Submission of standardized test scores is optional. If you are interested in submitting scores from the SAT, SAT II Subject, the ACT, or AP tests, we accept results officially reported from a high school or from the College Board. Bennington's SAT code is 3080, and its ACT code is 4296.
- Visits and Interviews: While interviews are not required, we strongly encourage you to visit campus. Tours and interviews can be scheduled most weekdays and Saturdays. Please call the Office of Admissions at 800-833-6845 complete and submit our Visit Request Form to arrange a time to tour campus, meet students, sit in on classes, and talk with an admissions counselor. In addition, upon receipt and review of your application, the Office of Admissions may schedule a telephone interview
