Anastas Reviews 1940 Gellhorn Novel in NYT

Literature faculty member Ben Anastas declared Martha Gellhorn’s 1940 book, A Stricken Field, the writer’s greatest novel and “essential reading for the political moment we’re living through today” in a New York Times book review.

The novel follows an American journalist as she confronts a growing refugee crisis in Prague at the beginning of World War II.

Gellhorn, who herself is considered one of the greatest war correspondents of the 20th century, is also known for being the third wife of American novelist Ernest Hemingway.
