New Book by Lethem '86 Draws Praise in the NYT

Author Jonathan Lethem '86's new novel Chronic City was hailed as "astonishing" this week in The New York Times Sunday Book Review.

The story, which centers on a circle of unlikely friends immersed in the bohemian social scene of Manhattan's Upper East Side, "is too intricate and seamless, and also too odd," Times critic Gregory Cowles concedes, "to summarize easily."

But the novel is recognizably Lethem's, Cowles goes on to say—"knowing and exuberant, with beautiful drunken sentences that somehow manage to walk a straight line."

Lethem, who was selected as a MacArthur "Genius" in 2005, has written several novels including Motherless Brooklyn, which won the National Book Critics Circle Award, Fortress of SolitudeThe Disappointment Artist, and many others.
