Rochester Philharmonic Commissions Violin Concerto by Shawn
A violin concerto composed by music faculty member Allen Shawn, commissioned by the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO), was performed on Thursday, March 11, and Saturday, March 13, at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre in Rochester.
Shawn describes the concerto, which will be performed by RPO Concertmaster Juliana Athayde, as "a singing, lyrical piece," with the first movement beginning with a "wisp of an orchestral idea" heard again in the third and fourth movements. "The concerto was composed shortly after I had written three piano Elegies," Shawn told the RPO, "and the tone of loss struck by this movement resembles that of the elegies."
