Design? Yes. Intelligent? No!--A Critique of Intelligent Design Theory at Bennington College

November 9, 2005

Dr. Massimo Pigliucci, author of Denying Evolution: Creationism, Scientism, and the Nature of Science, offers a critical analysis of “intelligent design theory” as part of Bennington College’s Robert H. Woodworth Lecture in the Sciences on Monday, November 14, 2005, at 7:30 pm in Tishman Lecture Hall.

Charles Darwin’s Origins of Species--upheld by scientists and rigorous examination--has faced a persistent challenge by religious groups because Origins does not support literal interpretations of biblical script. Dr. Pigliucci, Professor of Ecology and Evolution at SUNY, Stony Brook, evaluates the latest creationism incarnation, “intelligent design theory,” which has revised criticism of evolution and forced a national dispute that questions a scientific approach to understanding diversity. This dispute has impacted the way science is taught in American schools.

Dr. Pigliucci received his Doctorate in Genetics at the University of Ferrara in Italy, his PhD in Botany from the University of Connecticut, and a PhD in Philosophy of Science at the University of Tennessee. He has won the Dobzhansky Prize from the Society for the Study of Evolution, and was elected as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2004 “for fundamental studies of genotype by environmental interactions and for public defense of evolutionary biology from pseudoscientific attack.”
