Devoted Bennington College Alumna Makes $1 Million Commitment to Alma Mater
January 04, 2006 Barbara Ushkow Deane '51 and her husband Maurice of New York City have pledged $1 million to Bennington College for the continued renovation of the Deane Carriage Barn, a former stable turned performance and concert space that accommodates concerts, large and small exhibitions, readings, receptions, and additional events. This will be the final phase of renovations for the eponymous building, all of which have been generously funded by the Deanes over the past five years. "I am thrilled to support Bennington because I value its educational philosophy and its impact in the world. My experience at Bennington College changed my life and helped me to become the person I am today. With my giving, I hope to repay some of what I have gained so that future students will be able to have the opportunities I had," says Bobby Deane, a Bennington trustee. A long and loyal supporter of the College, Bobby joined the board of trustees in 1975 and currently serves as the board's vice chairman. "We are most grateful for the philanthropic investment Bobby and Maurie continue to make in Bennington. By completing the renovation of a most beloved campus building, students-and our entire community-will benefit from their generosity for years to come," says Elizabeth Coleman, President of Bennington College. The Deanes' pledge heightens the momentum created by the recent investment of several leadership donors in the renewal of Bennington's historic campus and the establishment of academic initiatives. The philanthropy of College trustees and close friends continues to inspire the community and ensure the tradition of innovation that is a Bennington hallmark. |
