Bennington College Sets its Spring 2006 Visual Arts Lecture Series
March 8, 2006 Bennington College announces the schedule for its Spring Visual Arts Lecture series. All events, unless otherwise noted, will be held in the Colleges Tishman Lecture Hall at 7:30 pm on the following dates: Tuesday, March 14, 1006 Black Maria Film & Video Festival The Visual Arts Lecture Series welcomes the 25th Annual Black Maria Film and Video festival. Since 1981, the annual international juried competition and award tour, has been fulfilling its mission to advocate, exhibit, and reward cutting-edge works from independent film and video makers. The festival is known for its national public exhibition program, which features a variety of bold contemporary works drawn from the annual collection of 50 award-winning films and videos. Wednesday, March 22, 2006 Location note: Usdan Gallery, Visual and Performing Arts Center (VAPA) Bennington Archives Display Opening A student-curated exhibition of the College's rich collection of photography archives. Tuesday, April 4, 2006 Shanti Thakur? Critically Acclaimed Director, Producer, and Writer Thakur has made documentary and experimental film since 1992, working at the National Film Board of Canada and independently. Her award-winning documentariesSeven Hours to Burn (1999), Circles (1997), Domino (1994), and Crossing Boarders (1992), along with othershave been included in 50 film festivals, broadcast in 22 countries, and received 10 awards. Moving to fiction, her most recent film, Kairos (2002), follows a woman who falls in love with two contradictory lovers offering different versions of happiness. Tuesday, April 18, 2006 Chris Doyle- Multidisciplinary Artist Chris Doyle is a multidisciplinary artist who lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. His work has been shown at P.S.1 Museum of Contemporary Art, the Queens Museum of Art, and at the Sculpture Center. He is represented by Jessica Murray Projects in Brooklyn, where he recently opened a solo show of new work. His major public projects include LEAP, presented by Creative Time, and Commutable, presented by The Public Art Fund. His work has been supported by grants from Creative Capital Foundation, New York Foundation for the Arts, and NYSCA. He received his Bachelors degree in Fine Arts from Boston College and his Masters in Architecture from Harvard University. Tuesday, May 9, 2006 Michael Singer?Sculptor, Designer Singers work opened new possibilities for outdoor and indoor sculpture and contributed to the definition of site-specific art and the development of public places. His works are part of public collections in the U.S. and abroad, including the Australian National Gallery, Canberra; Humlebaek, Denmark; New Yorks Metropolitan Museum of Art; and the Guggenheim Museum, New York. Several other lectures in the series will highlight the photography genre. These events will take place on the following Tuesdays: March 21, March 28, April 11, and May 2.
