Body Wars on Campus: Dr. Margo Maine Takes On Eating Disorders During a Visit to Bennington College

March 23, 2006

Bennington College invites the public to attend a lecture that tackles the difficult topic of eating disorders—conditions that affect nearly 10 million Americans each year. Margo Maine, PhD, a clinical psychologist, will examine the challenges of living in a global consumer culture that creates and benefits from our angst about our bodies, during her talk on Thursday, April 6, 2006, at 7:00 pm in the College’s Tishman Lecture Hall. This event is free and open to the public.

Maine, a Founding Member and Fellow of the Academy for Eating Disorders and a member of the Founder’s Council and past president of the National Eating Disorders Association, will provide the tools necessary to recognize and avoid dangerous dieting and exercise patterns, as well as those needed to identify the signs of behavior that lead to body abuse. She will also address how socio-cultural forces and constant media attention influence how people view and treat their bodies.

Author of books such as Body Wars: Making Peace with Women’s Bodies (2000) and, The Body Myth: Adult Women and the Pressure to Be Perfect (2005), Maine has specialized in the treatment and prevention of eating disorders for more than 25 years.

“We’ve been talking about the problem long enough; we must move into action,” Maine writes in Body Wars.
