    Bennington College Alumna Kiran Desai ‘93 Wins the Booker Prize for Fiction (October 12, 2006)
    The 2006 Man Booker Prize for Fiction "one of the most distinguished prizes in literature" went to Bennington College alumna Kiran Desai '93 for her novel The Inheritance of Loss published by Hamish Hamilton.     Bennington College celebrates the historic photography of Carolyn Crossett Rowland ’37, beginning Wednesday, September 20, 2006, in the College’s Usdan Gallery.   • Bennington College Decade-Long Writer-in-Residence, Donald Hall Named U.S. Poet Laureate (June 15, 2006)
    Donald Hall—distinguished poet and decade-long writer-in-residence at Bennington College's graduate writing program—received poetry's highest and most illustrious honor, having been named the United States Poet Laureate by Librarian of Congress James H. Billington. Accordingly, Hall will serve as "the nation's official lightning rod for the poetic impulse of Americans.   • Second Fulbright Will Take Drama Faculty Member to Other Side of the Globe (June 23, 2006)
    Michael Giannitti, drama faculty member at Bennington College since 1992, has been awarded his second Fulbright Senior Specialist grant. Having used his first award to teach at the National University of Art, Theater and Cinema in Bucharest, Romania, in fall 2004, Giannitti will use this grant to teach lighting design at the New Zealand Drama School in Wellington, New Zealand, for six weeks this summer.   • Mathematics Faculty Member “Graduating” with the Class of 2006 Set to Speak at Commencement (May 31, 2006)
    Bennington College has announced that mathematics faculty member Glen Van Brummelen will address the graduating class of 2006 during the commencement dinner on Friday, June 2, 2006. Van Brummelen, a historian of ancient and medieval mathematics and astronomy who has taught math at the College since 1999, will be leaving Bennington to be part of founding a new institution in his native Canada: Quest University, the first private secular liberal arts college in that country.   • Science Faculty Member Chosen to Chair ESA's Annual Meeting in '07 (May 23, 2006)
    Ecologist Kerry Woods, member of the science faculty for 20 years, has been invited to chair the 2007 Annual Meeting of the 9,000-member Ecological Society of America (ESA), a position typically held by individuals from large research universities. Woods, who earned his PhD in ecology and evolutionary biology from Cornell University, has studied a range of ecosystems and his current research—which involves many Bennington students—addresses the dynamics of old-growth forests in Michigan and landscape patterns in Vermont and the Taconic Mountains of New York.   • Author, Scholar, and Alumnus Michael Pollan '76 Examines the Natural History of Four Meals (May 8, 2006)
    The latest book by Michael Pollan '76, The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals begins with a simple question: "How did we ever get to a point where we need investigative journalists to tell us where our food comes from and nutritionists to determine the dinner menu?" What follows is anything but simple as Pollan tours readers through the origins of four meals from McDonald's, to Whole Foods, to a self-sustaining farm, and finally a "hunter-gather" entrée.   • Faculty Member and Former Diplomat Mansour Farhang Installed as the Catharine Osgood Foster Chair for Distinguished Teaching (May 8, 2006)
    Former Iranian ambassador to the United Nations, author, and current political science and international relations faculty member Mansour Farhang has just been named the Catharine Osgood Foster Chair for Distinguished Teaching, an endowed chair established in honor of one of Bennington College’s most esteemed teachers, Catharine “Kit” Osgood Foster, a member of the literature faculty from 1934 until her retirement in 1968.   • Members of Bennington College Community Receive Almost 20 Percent of the Honors Awarded by Academy of Arts & Letters (May 8, 2006)
    Of the 17 honors it is bestowing this year, the Academy of Arts and Letters is recognizing three members of the Bennington College community for accomplishment in their field. Poet Stephen Sandy, a member of Bennington’s literature faculty from 1969–2002, is being honored with an Academy Award in Literature, one of the highest prizes awarded by the Academy. Sandy is one of eight recipients to receive this prestigious honor. [Read more.]
  • Art Faculty Member Yoko Inoue Honored with 2006 Guggenheim Fellowship (April 24, 2006)

  • Bennington College Writer-in-Residence Donald Hall Releases New Collection of Poems to Critical Acclaim (April 20, 2006)
    Donald Hall, writer-in-residence in the Writing Seminars graduate program at Bennington College, received a uniquely audible endorsement from American Public Radio’s Garrison Keillor. Keillor selected Hall’s poem “We Bring Democracy to Fish” as a feature for his April 7, 2006, edition of The Writer’s Almanac, a daily, syndicated five-minute public radio program featuring a single poem each day. Keillor, well known for his breathy, deliberate renditions of poetry, read Hall’s short, provocative work, which was heard on more than 340 stations, nationwide. [Read more.]
