The New York Times: Bennington, VT "... home to one of the Nation's Top Private Colleges."

In a recent edition of Escape, a weekly travel section of The New York Times, North Bennington was described as “home to one of the country’s top private colleges.” The piece celebrated this "preserved, picturesque Vermont" town for offering, “big-city perks, accessible nature and bottomless history.”

Escape’s “36 Hours” tours readers through the points of culture that saturate North Bennington. The article’s 1 p.m. stop begins “Bennington College, which claims Jonathan Lethem and Sally Mann among its alumni, offers lectures and performing arts events often free and open to the public.” It continues to Usdan Gallery, which now hosts a rare exhibition of “photographs from the college’s collection by masters of the street scene--Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Robert Doisneau, Lee Friedlander and Garry Winogrand.”

Pangaea restaurant and Powers Market, owned and operated by Bennington College alumnus William Scully ’94, were recognized as well. Pangaea was noted as “a fine-dining salve for those used to the flawless choices in Manhattan.” While Powers Market was regarded as “the imposing but warm-hearted grandfather of the village.”

Concluding the “36 Hours” weekend getaway, readers are encouraged to visit The Park-McCullough House the historic estate “built in 1865 with spoils from the California gold rush,” of former Bennington College trustees Mr. and Mrs. Hall Park McCullough.
