Justin Theroux ’93 Makes Directorial Debut with “Dedication,” in Theaters Now

Alumnus and well-known actor, Justin Theroux ’93 turned his talent towards filmmaking after directing Dedication, staring Billy Crudup and Mandy Moore. The film, characterized by USA Today as the “modern day love story,” chronicles the life of an obsessive-compulsive children’s book author and the ensuing romance with his illustrator. Dedication—which opened in New York and Los Angeles on August 24, 2007, and will open nationwide September 14, 2007—has been praised by critics, with Rolling Stone pegging it as a “Sundance stand-out” after it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last year.

Reviews have been plentiful and favorable for Theroux. Some include the New York Daily News, which wrote: “Dedication is actor Justin Theroux’s very cool directorial debut.” The New York Times reviews: "...there is much to enjoy in this prickly, odd-couple pairing..." The New York Post proclaimed: “Justin Theroux's directorial debut, Dedication, is a pleasingly weird, dryly funny little indie.” The New York Sun adds, “Mr. Theroux's compositional taste for wide-angle lenses, rigid frames, and tight close-ups shows promise…”

Theroux, though new to directing, is not new to acting. He has appeared in scores of films and television series, including: Miami Vice, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, Mulholland Drive, Zoolander, as well as Sex in the City, Six Feet Under, Strangers With Candy, and The District, among many others. Frequently featured in the news, Theroux was most recently profiled in The New York Times on August 28, 2007, in a piece titled, “A Night Out with Justin Theroux.”
