Unpacking the Vault: Hidden Narratives in the Bennington Art Collection

VAPA Usdan Gallery

The Suzanne Lemberg Usdan Gallery is proud to announce the exhibition “Unpacking the Vault,” an exploration of the surprising scope of objects and narratives in the art holdings at Bennington College—and the first exhibition of these works co-curated by students. Over seven weeks in fall 2017, a class taught by Usdan Gallery Director and Curator Anne Thompson and Design and Planning Coordinator Erin McKenny delved into the campus art-storage space known as “the vault.” Students researched myriad objects by artists renowned, obscure and, occasionally, unknown. The resulting exhibition honors the eclectic nature of Bennington’s holdings—dense in some areas, abstract painting in particular, yet rich in surprises from the deeper past to the current moment. At the same time, it identifies core themes and agents  in the making, distribution, and acquisition of art.
