Rivka Deutsch“I did a mix of things over FWT, but the most exciting part was certainly my experiences shadowing doctors at the Nemours Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, DE. I spent a few days rotating in the pediatric surgery department, emergency room, inpatient pediatric department, and the outpatient clinic. I had the opportunity to observe a variety of surgeries from inside the surgical room, and saw a spinal tap procedure on a five day old infant in the emergency room. While in the outpatient clinic, I observed the care provided in routine medical visits, including some more complex pediatric patients with cerebral palsy. It was truly a remarkable, insightful, and motivating experience.

“In addition to observing the medical care and patient/doctor interactions, I also had the opportunity to interact with many residents and medical students working at the hospital. Since duPont is a teaching hospital, and an affiliate of Jefferson Medical College, I also had the opportunity to attend a couple of teaching lectures relevant to medical care.

“I also spent some time researching schools, studying for the MCAT, and being with family and friends.”
