OPEN TO THE PUBLIC | Julia Mata (she/they) is a Central American and Eastern European Jewish Pale of Settlement illustrator, curator, and comic book author based in Long Beach, California. Their work has been
featured in the New York Times and Hyperallergic, as well as Horchata Zine, Hyrsteria Zine,
Freaks Comix, The Betty’s, and Chiflada Zine. Mata has organized exhibitions, radio shows, and
events with MOMA PS1, The Children's Museum of New York, The ICA Boston, and The
Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural and Educational Center.

Julia Mata is one third of Spicy Mango Comics, an independent press and publication collective
creating zines and comics. As a recent MacDowell Fellow, they completed the first draft of their
debut graphic novel Crisis! which, after being self-published for five years, will be released by
Drawn & Quarterly in late 2023.
