Theaster Gates Visits Bennington
Theaster Gates cannily maneuvers the tools of the art world to create cultural communities and catalyze social and political change. His work has appeared in the Whitney Biennial, dOCUMENTA 13, and in shows at museums throughout Europe and the US, including his current solo exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C, but it is most apparent in the neighborhood in Chicago’s South Side that he has transformed through a long-term practice of social engagement.
He has received numerous awards including the Kurt Schwitters Prize, the Smithsonian Ingenuity Award for Social Progress, the Artes Mundi 6 Prize, the inaugural Vera List Center Prize for Art and Politics, and a Graham Foundation Architecture Award.
