Alexander Jin

Alexander Jin is a historian of gender, sexuality, and Asian America whose work focuses on queer Chinese migrants and diverse histories of sex work.
Biography
Jin is a historian of gender, sexuality, and Asian America. Their in-progress book, Heathen Intimacy: Chinese Migrants and Criminal Sexualities in Turn of the Century California, explores the varied gender and sexual histories of Chinese Californians between the 1850s and early twentieth century. Examples of his work can be found in the Pacific Historical Review, the Journal of American-East Asian Relations, and Amerasia (forthcoming).
Jin's work has been generously supported by fellowships from The Huntington Library, the Bancroft Library at U.C. Berkeley, and the Effron Center for the Study of America. Prior to Bennington, Jin completed a PhD in History and graduate certificate in Gender and Sexuality Studies at Princeton University. They learned to love history and learning at Swarthmore College and hopes to bring a similar passion to Bennington students. Jin is a visiting faculty member at Bennington for the 2025-2026 academic year.
