Picture This!: Images in Natural History Guides.
When one pictures a nature guidebook, one pictures... pictures. The ubiquity of pictures can be understood intuitively, but to put it in words, "naturalistic images [close] the gap between textual knowledge of nature and the experience of it," (Swan, 188). With that being said, how many words is a picture really worth? How valuable are different types of images in natural history guides, as well as the descriptive text that may or may not accompany them? How do we succeed (or fail) in capturing not only the practical existence of a creature, but also the lived experience between it and its beholder?
