Jessica McKenzie, candidate for a faculty position in Developmental Psychology, will give a presentation titled "Selves in a Global Society: The Texture of Cultural Hybridity Among Thai Youth." Focusing on ethnographic data gathered in Northern Thailand, this talk will explore the ways in which rural and urban Thai youth are affected by, and affect, cultural change. Linking external practices and internal conceptions of self and other, it will point to behavioral practices imbued with cultural meaning as sites of self-negotiation. It will highlight continuity and change in self and social relationships, and opportunity and constraint experienced by rural and urban youth alike, as a result of rapid cultural change.
