OPEN TO THE PUBLIC | This is an opportunity to delve into our racial identities, where they originated, how they have been fostered. Starting with a short reading by Audre Lorde, "The Transformation of Silence Into Language and Action," we will springboard into a conversation about when and why we hold silences, especially around issues of race. How does this action of silence create a world of "others" around us? By looking into our own choice of when we speak out (for ourselves, for others), we can more closely recognize our part in upholding racial identities, and therefore, the racial injustices that have been supported by society. Dr. J Finley, Assistant Professor of American Studies & Gender, Sexuality and Feminist Studies—Middlebury College, will guide us, along with prompts and activities in this workshop to bring us closer to our histories, voices, and our responsibility for racial justice.
