OPEN TO THE PUBLIC | Eighteen performances display the joyously luxuriant and varied bloom of band art at Bennington College over seven nights.

From Schoenberg songs and Tejano blues-rock to a subtle indoor-outdoor installation using “found” sounds from the dining-hall kitchen…On to minimalist math metal, neo-psychedelic, Dadaist-comprov and prog-rock performance art bands, via ancient Serbian ritual dance interwoven electronically with genuine Bosnian voices. Bands and their composers explore Father-Son, Mother-Daughter, Parent-child relationships, romance, sleep and dreams through delicate R&B, luminous Folk and Soul, and a cappella, while a woman-led band called Afterbirth combines outrageous punk and fairytale pop.Two operas chase tales of coming-of-age and human-against-the-machine —a young woman, voice stolen at birth and verbal only via violin, journeys to find her true voice—and female lumberjacks combat computerized logging industry by enlisting Paul Bunyan and John Henry. Band art goes on to challenge musical boundaries incorporating string quartets, trios, duos, fiddles, accordions, brass, woodwinds and Sunday sermons…while an electric bass enjoys a comprov-funk cantata and songwriters instill the precision of chamber lieder. Home-built guitars, speakers, and personal orchestras frame the glory of imagination in this week-long celebration.
