Ehrlich ’67 Wins Thoreau Prize
PEN New England has named author Gretel Ehrlich ‘67 winner of the 2010 Henry David Thoreau Prize for Literary Excellence in Nature Writing.
In recognition of her "exceptional talents as a nature writer who so artfully expresses the grandeur and loneliness of natural settings," the prize was presented to Ehrlich following her talk on "Writing About Nature" at the Geological Lecture Hall in Cambridge, MA, on May 6.
The author of more than a dozen books, Ehrlich's work has appeared in Best Essays of the Century, Best American Essays, Best Spiritual Writing, Best Travel Writing, and The Nature Reader, as well as in the Atlantic, Harper's, Time Magazine, Life, and National Geographic.
Ehrlich's previous awards include a National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Humanities grant, a Whiting Foundation Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and the Harold B. Vurcell Award at the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
