Fragment for the Necessary Angel

If needing a more unculminated world
Or harsher in every shape the tentative,
The pang and tentative of action’s stealth,
That vision not be crux of vision’s competence
As memory is rose, rose sovereign of sight
All dereliction ransomed in the bud,
The accurate passion of your passioned art

Is not arraigned for little differences,
Honoring the debt one paid to tame the hush
And stutter of the eye’s unwieldy perpetual design,
The vibrant and the black of things unreconciled
Sighted suf cient at last to sight, to music
The perfect surgeon of its melody, there always sounding
The dark luminous nerve of necessary reverence.
