Moving Out

At the end of the spring term, EVERY house has to move out.

  • Remove all of your personal belongings from your house common room, bathroom, kitchen and hallway closets. There is no storage available on campus. Any items left in a common area will be discarded and the house will be charged for the removal of excessive trash. See below for local storage options. If you are using Boomerang Storage you may leave your containers/boxes in your room for them to pick up on Sunday, June 1, 2025.

  • Paran Creek students must be in their term assigned rooms in their apartments so that all other bedrooms and common rooms can be cleaned for summer student housing. Paran Creek students and summer students must label their items in the refrigerator and have all other personal items brought into their rooms so that they are not discarded by Buildings & Grounds.

  • Check all drawers and cabinets to ensure that nothing is left behind. Items left in student rooms will be donated at the College’s discretion.

  • Plants can be brought to the UpCaf. Please put your name on them

  • College-issued furniture needs to be returned to the proper room and assembled. If it is not or if it is damaged, you will be charged a fee for Buildings and Grounds staff to reassemble, move and/or replace it.

  • Free piles are not allowed in houses. Donations can be brought to TAPA (Fridays and Saturdays 6:00–10:00 pm, Sundays 12:00–4:00 pm) or to the blue bins in the Student Center. TAPA closes for the term on Sunday, May 25. If free piles are found in the houses, the houses will be charged for removal.

  • Put all of your garbage in plastic bags and dispose of it in the proper receptacles (the dumpsters on your street). Leaving trash in your room will result in individual room charges. Additionally, leaving trash in and around your house (including the exterior) will result in house charges to be split among all residents. 

  • Give your room a clean sweep before you leave. You will avoid a charge and your housekeeper will thank you for it.

  • Make sure that you have everything you need, including photo identification, passport, U.S. immigration documents, clothing, etc., before you store your belongings.

  • Leave the window shades up to prevent condensation and moisture build-up on the windows. Moisture build-up creates mold.

  • Take a photo of your room in case you need to dispute charges during the damage appeal period in the fall.

  • Checkout via StarRez and return your key to Campus Safety.

Review/Update Your Contact Information and Forwarding Address 

Please review the contact information we have on record for you to be sure it is correct. If you would like to have your mail forwarded to you over the summer, please complete the Contact Information Form by May 24, 2025. You can also use this form to update your parent/guardian, emergency, or missing person contact information. Once you press submit, this information will update Populi automatically.

Checking Out

Checkout Time

  • Undergraduates | Friday, May 30 at noon. Residence Life and Campus Safety staff will walk through the houses. Students remaining on campus who are not participating in Commencement or without prior authorization from Residence Life will be fined $200 the first day (May 30), $300 the next day, and an additional $100 for each day after that.
  • Graduates | Saturday, May 31, 4:00 pm. Residence Life and Campus Safety staff will walk through the houses. Students remaining on campus past this time will be fined $200 the first day (May 31), $300 the next day, and an additional $100 for each day after that.
  • All students must check out of their rooms using the below process. Please note that students living in Paran Creek will not turn in keys, but the rest of the process will be the same.

    To check out, on or before your scheduled check out date and time, proceed to one of the two approved checkout locations:
    • the IT@Bennington Help Desk between the hours of 8:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. Monday - Thursday, 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. on Friday; or
    • the Campus Safety Booth at the entrance to campus.

      To check out:
      ​​​​ 
    • Inform the Help Desk technician or Campus Safety dispatcher that you are there to check out of your room;
    • The technician or dispatcher will give you a small, manila envelope. Print your name, house and room # on this envelope, place your room key inside, and seal it. Hand the envelope to the technician or dispatcher.
    • The technician or dispatcher will then check you out in StarRez.
  • Students approved for summer housing may stay in their spring assigned rooms until they move to Paran Creek on Wednesday, June 4, 2025 after 3 pm. However, all students MUST check out of their rooms for the spring term and check back in for the summer via StarRez, even if they are staying in the same room.
  • Wait in DownCommons if you can’t leave by the deadline. Students who are unable to depart campus by the deadline can wait in DownCommons with their belongings.

Checkout Process

As we plan for the end of the semester, we want to remind you that all students, including those staying at the college over the summer, must check out of their spring housing assignment via the checkout process (see below), by their scheduled check out time. This is true even if you will be staying in your current Paran Creek room over the summer; all students must check out for the spring term by the checkout time identified in StarRez to avoid late checkout fees.

*Paran Creek students will need to physically stop by one of the identified locations in order to check out of your spring housing assignment and be checked into your summer housing assignment (if applicable)*

Unless you have a late check out approved by Buildings & Grounds, check out times are as follows:

  • Friday, May 30, 2025, noon: General student checkout.
  • Saturday, May 31, 2025, 4:00 p.m.: Graduating student and commencement workers checkout.
  • Wednesday, June 4, 2025, after 3 pm. Students approved for summer housing in Paran Creek start moving from campus to Paran Creek. Check out of your spring housing assignment and check in to your summer housing assignment outlined in the checkout process. Return your spring assignment key to the appropriate location - see instructions below.

To check out of your room:

  • On or before your scheduled check out date and time, check out at one of the two approved checkout locations:
    • the IT@Bennington Help Desk (in the DownCommons) between the hours of 8:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. Monday - Thursday, 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. on Friday; or
    • the Campus Safety Booth (after business hours) at the entrance to campus.
  • To check out: 
    • Inform the Help Desk technician or Campus Safety dispatcher that you are there to check out of your room;
    • The technician or dispatcher will give you a small, manila envelope. Print your name, house and room # on this envelope, place your room key inside, and seal it. Hand the envelope to the technician or dispatcher.
    • The technician or dispatcher will then check you out in StarRez.

Please be aware that a fee of $200 for the first day, $300 for the second day, and $100 per day after that will be billed to your account if you do not visit one of these locations to check out. Additionally, if you check out without returning your key, a rekeying fee of $100 will be billed to your account.

Storage

Bennington College has partnered with Boomerang Storage to make your move-out much easier and less stressful. If you are looking to store or ship your belongings as we all approach the end of the academic year, here is how Boomerang Storage's service works:

  • Free Boxes and Tape: Boomerang provides Free Boxes and Tape for packing. Supplies will be dropped off on Friday, May 16 in the Student Center. 

  • Register for pick up via Boomerang by Friday, May 23, 2025.

  • Pickup: Your storage will be picked up at your residence on Sunday, June 1, 2025. You do not need to be present. The Residence Life staff will allow Boomerang into the room to retrieve your boxes/containers. Just leave everything in your room packed neatly, and Boomerang will take it away!

  • Delivery: Boomerang will deliver your belongings to your new room on Saturday, August 30

  • Shipping: They can ship to almost anywhere in the world.Insurance: All your stuff is insured to up to $100 per box. Some restrictions apply.
