On April 1, 2026, Bennington College Interim President Elissa Tenny announced the appointment of a distinguished chair to the Presidential Search Committee.

“We have the full support of the campus behind this leadership position,” said Tenny. “After a formal sit down, both the Chair of the Board of Trustees and the House Chairs gave their endorsement.”

As Bennington continues the search for its 12th president, Tenny explained, the need for this type of leadership structure has become apparent.

“This distinguished chair is supportive to everyone they encounter,” said Tenny. “We are looking for guidance that is firm and strong, but not too wooden. It needs to have the understanding that sometimes people need a soft, cushiony place to land. Good lumbar support is important, too.”

This is the first distinguished chair appointment of its kind at Bennington.

“While being a trailblazer can be difficult, we are lucky,” said Tenny. “This distinguished chair has proven time and again that it can stand on its own legs.”

While the distinguished chair was not available for comment, its online presence mentions a love of woodworking and a penchant for heavy metal.
