Bennington Stages ‘Belarusian Dream’

Bennington students participating in an international theater festival organized in support of Belarusian freedom of expression staged a series of short plays on March 25 to commemorate Belarusian Freedom Day, an unofficial holiday observed in opposition to the country’s authoritarian regime.

Theaters throughout Europe, Australia, Canada, and the U.S. participated in the festival, which was organized by alumnus Brendan McCall MFA ’03 and included Oz Revisited, a play written by faculty member Danny Michaelson.

Production style reflected the constraints under which artists standing up to repressive regimes must work: censorship, movable performances, ensemble work, and spare production elements.

The event began in studio D207, VAPA, and traveled to several performance spaces, with a short discussion afterwards. A second staging will take place on April 25.
