OPEN TO THE PUBLIC |  An introduction to Chinese opera and its influence on traditional puppetry- shadow theater (“pi ying”) and hand puppets (“budaixi”). Learn how the conventions of opera performance (costumes, makeup, movement, and repertoire) are transformed for the puppet stage. Chinese Theatre Works artists Kuang-Yu Fong and Stephen Kaplin are your guides for this exciting, informative tour-- using our traditional puppets and clips from opera performances to vividly demonstrate the close relationship between the different genres of Chinese theater techniques. Suitable for all ages.

Chinese Theatre Works is a New York City-based cultural organization that specializes in presenting traditional Chinese performing arts and creating new theater works that blend Chinese and Western performance practice. Founded by Kuang-Yu Fong and Stephen Kaplin, CTW has over 25 years of hands-on experience performing, producing, researching, teaching, and mentoring, CTW has earned an international reputation for its unique body of work.
