Field Work Term Spotlight: Maverick Yarger
Maverick Yarger '27 studies Drama and Sculpture, with a focus on properties fabrication, at Bennington. For the winter 2026 Field Work Term, Yarger is assisting playwright Catherine Filloux.
How does your Field Work Term relate to your studies at Bennington?
My Field Work Term is related to my studies at Bennington because I am working for a professional in the theater industry, designing props and doing prop-related paperwork for an upcoming project. It diverges from my direct studies because I am also getting experience working on skills like transcribing interviews and social media outreach.
What does a typical day at your Field Work Term site look like?
A typical day at my Field Work Term site includes a lot of remote work from anywhere I want in New York City, whether it be a cafe or my room (with my cat supervising). My schedule is largely self-motivated, and I spend the day researching, designing, and sharing ideas with my supervisor and team of fellow creators. I also get the opportunity to meet artists and other theater professionals that my supervisor has set up for me.
What has surprised you most about your Field Work Term position?
The breadth of work that goes into being a working theater professional has been surprising to me. My supervisor manages to balance many projects at once that include nonprofit work, social media, theater, and film, all of which I have gotten to help with. It has been inspiring to see that there is a way to include many of my interests work in a professional capacity and to see that I don't have to stick to one thing or project at a time.
What do you hope to do for your next Field Work Term?
For my next Field Work Term, I hope to work for a theater company in their props department, either fabricating props or managing/caring for existing ones (or both!).
