Guggenheim Fellowship logo Bennington Faculty and Alumni Score Big with Guggenheim Fellowships

The Guggenheim Memorial Foundation has announced that five members of Bennington's community have been honored with this year's 2008 Guggenheim Fellowships for their "distinguished achievement in the past and exceptional promise for future accomplishment." Guggenheim Fellowships, one of the nation's most prestigious honors, were given to current MFA in Writing faculty member Michael Paul Burkard; acclaimed poet Reginald Shepherd '88; innovative choreographer Myrna Packer '74; New Yorker magazine editor and translator Ann Goldstein '71; and professor of organism biology and ecology at the University of Massachusetts, Laurie R. Godfrey '67.

Clinton Global Initiative University Bill Clinton Singles Out Bennington at Kick-Off Event of Clinton Global Initiative University

Former President William J. Clinton invited Bennington’s President Elizabeth Coleman to join him at a press conference on Saturday, March 15, 2008, to inaugurate the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U)—a new venture of the Clinton Global Initiative that challenges college students and universities to tackle global problems with practical, innovative solutions. Clinton highlighted just two commitments in his press announcement: Bennington College’s and a commitment made by a Yale undergraduate student.

Carole Maso is revered by readers and fellow writers for her boundary-breaking novels, including The Art Lover, AVA, and most recently, Mother & Child. She joined the faculty of the Writing Seminars this past June and, on the first day of residency, gave a remarkable lecture that set the mood for the whole ten days. We talked about that lecture and the relationship between a writer’s life and her work.
